Statement

As described in the ABOUT section, most of my paintings are “expressionist” pictures, “abstract” images or “realistic” portraits of women.

Some commentators have described the “true” mission of visual art as promoting “a sensory understanding of what matters most in life … [and] changing how we experience the world.” While I have no quarrel with these lofty aims, the primary purpose of my artwork is to provide enjoyment. If a piece also edifies or enlightens particular viewers, then so much the better. Nevertheless, my subjective measure of an artwork’s success is basically whether and how much I want to look at it (for whatever reasons). If I enjoy looking at it, maybe others would too (whether for similar reasons or quite different ones).

Why I Have a Website and Post on Social Media

Although selling my artwork is not a priority for me, having a website vastly increases the number of people who can view my work if they wish, and the purpose of making paintings and drawings is for people to see them (whether I want to sell them or not).

In view of my Night Surveillance painting, posting my artwork on social media seems ironic.  But artist friends insist that I should do so if I’m serious about encouraging people to view my work.

Like all digital images of art, my website and posts on social media are best viewed on a larger screen.

 FAQs

Why didn’t you invite me to the exhibitions on your HOME page?

Unfortunately, nobody was invited, because these exhibitions were not held IRL and are being presented only online.  These online exhibitions were created as an alternative to attempting to hold live events during the COVID pandemic.

Why are many of your paintings studies for larger pictures?

In many cases, rather than spend time painting a full-sized picture that might only end up in storage, I paint a study for a larger-sized image that I’d very much like to produce if, but only if, someone actually wants to have it and put it on display (whether in a private home or office or in a public space).

Why don’t you list prices for works available for purchase?

Since context is important to how effectively artwork is shown, my prices for paintings, whether already completed or to be done on commission, depend in part on who the prospective client is (e.g., private individual, business entity, not-for-profit institution) and what the client plans to do with the artwork. My paintings and drawings are not commodities, and maximizing income is not my goal.

Also, in the case of paintings to be done on commission, I can’t estimate how much work and material will be involved until size and other specifications have been determined.
